Teacher Reading Story To Infant School Pupils

These are some of the Key Stage 1 recommended by Network members:

TES

Originally (and still) an educational newspaper, the Times Educational Supplement (TES) Teaching Resources has become possibly the largest sections of the TES site. It is effectively a market place for resources, with teachers buying and selling all manner of teaching material on the site. There are some free resources but you can quite quickly spend a considerable amount of money on resources.

Phonics Play

Phonics play has a wide range of games that can be adapted depending on the phase of your phonics group. Most teachers are aware of this website, but it is essential when supply teaching as it requires minimal planning and can be adapted for any ability. To keep all children engaged, get them to write the answers on whiteboards or try splitting them into teams for added motivation. It is a quick and simple way to fill an extra 20 minutes if your lesson finishes early. All the resources are currently free if you log in using the following details:

Cosmic Kids Yoga

This youtube channel provides a range of videos to help you adapt a classes mood or behaviour. It can be an effective way for children to relax before the start of your lesson, or provide a brain break if they are losing motivation. It is brilliant for managing children’s emotions and wellbeing to help them learn effectively, which will be a priority for many schools after the pandemic. For older year groups or classes who may need a more uplifting and motivating environment, ‘Just Dance Kids’ videos on youtube are also effective. However, unlike ‘Cosmic Kids’ these are not from a certified channel, so please check each video is appropriate for the age group before using it.

Roald Dahl

The Roald Dahl website currently has a huge range of free activities, including story readings, drawing tutorials, games and quizzes. They can be played to the class for pupils to join in with, or can be accessed by children themselves if iPads or computers are available. The activities are designed to engage and inspire children of all ages, and are especially useful if no work has been left for an English lesson

Pobble 365, ‘Picture of the day’

Pobble 365 provides a unique picture every day which is designed to promote discussion and comprehension skills in children. The images include photographs, drawings and fairytale characters and you can search through previous days to find one suitable for your class or linked to a specific topic. Each image has a series of questions and activities underneath which can be adapted to suit all abilities and year groups or turned into worksheets for a guided reading session. Ideal for EAL and SEND learners, particularly if you don’t know the class, as it is based around an image so removes any language or reading barriers
